How to choose a horizontal bandsaw for your workshop

A bandsaw is one of the most-used machines in any metal shop. Choosing the right one saves time and money. Here is what to consider.

Cutting capacity. What is the largest workpiece you need to cut? For large solid round or square material, a horizontal bandsaw is typically recommended because of its robust design and wider blade capability. Check the maximum diameter and rectangle dimensions.

Automation level. Manual saws are the simplest. Semi-automatic saws are better for small batch work. Fully automatic saws feed and cut material automatically, ideal for high-volume production.

Motor power and blade. Horsepower determines cutting speed and capability. Blade width affects cutting accuracy and material size. For bundle cutting, look for wider blades and bundle clamps.

Pivot vs dual column. Pivot (scissor) type is good for general fabrication and mitre cutting. Dual column is more rigid for heavy-duty cutting.
