How to choose the right CNC bending machine tonnage for your shop

Choosing the wrong tonnage is expensive. Too small, and the machine cannot bend your thickest material. Too large, and you waste money on capacity you will never use. Here is how to get it right.

The basic formula. Required tonnage depends on three things: sheet thickness, material tensile strength, and die opening width. The industry-standard guideline is a die opening of 6 to 8 times the sheet thickness. A common formula is: Required Bending Tonnage (T) = 650 × Sheet Thickness² (mm) × Bending Length (m) ÷ Lower Die Opening Width (mm).

Add a safety margin. Always spec 20% to 30% more capacity than your calculated value. If your most frequent job requires 80 tons, buy a 100-ton machine. This prevents machine fatigue and gives you flexibility.

Test before you buy. At SUNLINK MACHINERY CITY, you can test CNC bending machines with different tonnages on standard test materials. No need to bring your own. Feel the difference. Compare bend angle consistency. Find the right fit for your shop.
